Today we run a successful, multi-site ecommerce company. But it wasn't always that way...
Way back in the late 1980s I got out of the Navy, and landed a job in industrial equipment sales. I spent the next decade busting my butt - driving the wheels off of a series of cars up and down the east coast. It was hard work, but I had a dream. I was going to own my own company.
It took years, but I got what I wanted. There was just one problem. My customers were disappearing, and fast. Factories were closing down left and right. Manufacturing was moving to Mexico, and then to China.
I had my company, but it was starting to look more like a nightmare than a dream.
I was sitting in my home office, grinding away when my oldest son came in with my laptop - a Zenith with a "massive" 4 gig hard drive.
"Dad, look at this."
He had a browser open and it showed a picture of a microscope, with a price and a phone number underneath. This was long before online shopping carts.
"I bet you could sell your stuff this way too."
He was right.
I found out that one of my suppliers had a web page. I called him and he hooked me up with his designer, and we were off to the races.
Now it's nearly 20 years later, and we're still going strong. I've managed to weather all of the booms and busts, the birth of the search engines (and their subsequent destruction by Google), and much, much more.
